Bologna relies on a low block and quick transitions to catch opponents out. This 5-4-1 formation is built to stay hard to beat and strike on the break. They aim to sit deep and absorb pressure before launching long balls or quick passes to the front line.

In goal, 5 acts as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a central trio of 8, 6, and 7. 8 sits in the middle to command the area, while 6 and 7 cover the channels. To provide width, 2 and 4 operate as wing backs. 2 pushes up to support the left flank, while 4 tracks back to prevent crosses on the right. Defenders work together to stay compact and deny space between the lines.

The midfield is a flat four designed to protect the central zone. 10 and 9 act as the central pair to shield the defense and win the second ball. One of them, 10, can drive forward with the ball to connect the lines, while 9 stays deeper to intercept passes. On the flanks, 1 and 3 provide width and cover the wing backs. 1 and 3 work to squeeze the space in the middle and force the opposition wide. This four-man unit helps Bologna stay compact when they sit deep.

A lone striker, 11, leads the attack and acts as a target man to hold up the ball. 11 must fight for long balls to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. When Bologna wins the ball, 1 and 3 can push forward to support the attack. This striker often works to pin the last defender, creating space for 10 or 9 to arrive late into the box. Moving in transition, the team aims to hit in behind on the transition through quick vertical passes.

One major advantage is the compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when 2 and 4 push high. By utilizing the wing backs, Bologna can stretch the defence and find space for the midfielders to move into.

This formation is built for defensive solidity and quick vertical attacks. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined low block.
