Inter focuses on a high press and rapid transitions using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the central areas while utilizing the wings to stretch the opposition. The team seeks to win it back high up the pitch and quickly move the ball forward to exploit gaps.

Yann Sommer acts as the last line of defense, playing out from the back to start attacks. The back three consists of Benjamin Pavard, Yann Bisseck, and Alessandro Bastoni. Bastoni is a ball playing defender who can step up to engage attackers, while Pavard and Bisseck provide strength in the air and cover the space behind. This unit works together to maintain a high line and squeeze the space between the defense and midfield.

The midfield works as a central engine to control the tempo and link the lines. Hakan Calhanoglu acts as the deep lying playmaker, often dropping between the centre backs to receive the ball and recycle possession. Federico Dimarco and Denzel Dumfries operate as attacking wing backs, providing width and overlapping the midfielders to create overloads. Nicolo Barella and Piotr Zielinski occupy the half spaces, with Barella often driving forward with the ball to link the midfield to the attack.

The attacking front line uses two forwards in a partnership to pressure the opposition back line. Lautaro Martinez works as a pressing centre forward, often finding space to arrive late into the box. Marcus Thuram plays alongside him, using his strength to hold up the ball and create space for his partner. This duo combines in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position, often looking for runs in behind or receiving layoffs from the midfield.

Inter offers several tactical advantages through this specific formation. The presence of Dimarco and Dumfries creates wide overloads that force the opposition to defend against constant crosses. A second strength is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to compress the midfield and dominate the second ball. The ability to switch play quickly between the wide players and the central attackers makes Inter very difficult to mark.

This 3-5-2 formation provides Inter with a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch. It is a setup best suited for games against teams that play with a narrow midfield or struggle to track late runs.
