Atalanta seeks to control the pitch through overwhelming numbers in the middle, using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to suffocate the opposition in their own half and dominate the ball. By flooding the central areas, the team aims to create constant passing lanes and high turnover opportunities. Rui Patricio stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. Behind a very narrow back two of Skrtel/Kvist and Yepes, the team relies on a high line to keep the distance between units small. Because there are no traditional full backs, Skrtel/Kvist and Yepes must be prepared to defend one on one or rely on the midfield to track back and cover the flanks when the ball is switched.

The midfield acts as the engine of Atalanta, operating with six players to ensure total dominance. Toloi acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of him, Montero and Albertini occupy the central spaces to control the tempo and recycle possession. Scaloni works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often finding space to drive forward with the ball. The wide areas are filled by Cuadrado and Cerci, who operate as attacking midfielders rather than true wingers. Cuadrado and Cerci move inside to create overloads in the half spaces, forcing the opposition to defend in very tight spaces.

The attacking unit features a duo of forwards to stretch the opposition defense. Caniggia/Osvaldo and Inzaghi/Vieiri work in close partnership to exploit gaps. They often look to play one two combinations or use their movement to pull defenders out of position. While the midfield provides the bulk of the creative work, the two forwards focus on finding the feet of the strikers or making runs in behind. The attack is designed to capitalize on the chaos created by the six midfielders, often finishing moves with quick combinations in the box.

This formation provides massive numerical superiority in the center of the pitch, making it very difficult for opponents to keep the ball. Atalanta can also use the wide players to create overloads in the half spaces, pulling the opposition defense apart. The ability to press in a mid block with so many players allows the team to squeeze the space and win the ball high up the pitch. This creates immediate chances through speed of transition.
