Starting Lineup

Colwill · Fofana · Cucurella · Gusto · Caicedo · Enzo · Palmer · Toney · Neto · Madueke · Sanchez

Chelsea focuses on a high press and quick vertical play using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike fast before the opposition can settle. The team looks to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence and create gaps for through balls.

Sanchez plays between the posts to start the build up. The defensive unit works as a flat back four with Gusto acting as an attacking full back on the right side. Cucurella covers the left flank and can push high to support the attack. In the middle of the defence, Fofana provides aerial strength and physical presence, while Colwill plays as a ball playing centre back to progress through the thirds. This back four works to hold a high line and squeeze the space.

The midfield operates with a three man midfield with a carrier and creative players. Caicedo works to shield the defence and intercept passes in a mid block. Enzo receives the ball to play short from the back and uses his passing range to find teammates in advanced positions. Palmer plays in the hole as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to connect the lines and arrive late into the box. This trio works to control the tempo and win the second ball in the center of the pitch.

In the attacking third, Chelsea uses three attackers across the front to pressure the opposition. Toney acts as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball and hold up the ball for others. Neto plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create chances, while Madueke stays wide on the right to isolate a one on one situation. These forwards aim to make runs in behind and pull wide to create room in the middle.

This formation provides Chelsea with several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads from the overlapping full backs combined with the wingers. There is also a clear ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball in dangerous areas. The presence of Palmer in the half spaces allows the team to find ways to split the defence with a through ball.

The 4-3-3 formation allows Chelsea to maintain high intensity through pressing and quick transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to play out from the back.
