Starting Lineup

Chilwell · James · Badiashile · W. Fofana · Caicedo · E. Fernández · Palmer · J. Félix · Mudryk · Nkunku · Sánchez

Chelsea seeks to control the game through high pressing and verticality in this 2-5-3 formation. The lineup is built to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch and force errors from the opposition. By playing with such a high line, Chelsea looks to win the ball back high up the pitch to launch immediate attacks.

Sánchez acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very aggressive two man back line. W. Fofana and Badiashile operate as central defenders who must step up to engage attackers early. Because there are only two defenders, they must be ready to cover large spaces and win the second ball if the initial press fails. They act as ball playing defenders to start attacks quickly after a turnover.

The midfield is a dense five man block that dominates the center. James and Chilwell play as wide defensive midfielders to provide width and protect the flanks. Caicedo and E. Fernández operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. E. Fernández uses his passing range to break the line, while Caicedo presses aggressively to win the ball back in the middle. Nkunku plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space and arrive late into the box.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers to pin the opposition defense. J. Félix leads the line as a striker who drops into midfield to link up play. Mudryk and Palmer operate as wide attackers, with Mudryk using his pace on the left and Palmer cutting inside from the right to create chances. This attacking unit focuses on quick combinations and making runs in behind to exploit gaps left by a high defensive line.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The dense midfield also offers numerical superiority in the center, allowing the team to squeeze the space and control the tempo. Additionally, the width provided by James and Chilwell allows the team to stretch the defence and create one on one situations for the wingers.

This formation relies on extreme bravery and high physical output to maintain its aggressive identity. It is best suited for games where Chelsea needs to dominate possession and overwhelm an opponent through central control and rapid transitions.
