Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Toney · Palmer · Neto · Madueke · Gusto · Cucurella · Sánchez · Colwill · Fofana · Fernández · CaicedoChelsea prefers to play with a high press and quick transitions through a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use the pace of the front three to attack the opposition defense. The lineup relies on verticality to move the ball from the back to the front as quickly as possible.
Sánchez plays in goal to command the area and start play from the back. The back line operates as a flat back four where Gusto plays as the right back and Cucurella acts as the left back. Fofana and Colwill form the central pairing, with Colwill acting as a ball playing defender to help progress play. These defenders work together to hold a high line and squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch.
The midfield uses a three man midfield with a carrier and a playmaker. Caicedo works to shield the defense and win the second ball while Fernández looks to create from deep with his wide passing range. Palmer operates in the half spaces as an attacking ten behind the striker, linking the midfield to the front line. This unit works to compress the midfield and ensure the team stays compact when they do not have the ball.
Chelsea uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Toney acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and hold up the ball for others. Madueke and Neto play as wide wingers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. The attack is designed to create runs in behind and use the width provided by the wingers to pull the opposition defenders out of position.
One major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back quickly. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when Palmer finds the forwards after a turnover. This allows them to isolate wide players in one on one situations against the full backs.
This 4-3-3 formation provides a high level of intensity in the attacking third. It is a lineup best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to play out from the back.
