Dominating the middle of the pitch is the primary goal for Atlético in this 2-6-2 formation. The team relies on a high press and an overwhelming central presence to control the tempo. This formation is built to play a possession based style where the center of the pitch is heavily occupied to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

Oblak sits behind a very narrow duo of central defenders. Giménez and Le Normand must be ready to cover huge amounts of space because there are no wide defenders to help. They often have to step up to intercept passes or hold the line to set the offside trap. These two must be dominant in the air and quick to win the second ball if the opposition tries to go direct. The defensive unit works by squeezing the space in front of them with a massive midfield block.

The midfield is a six-man engine that connects the defense to the attack. Mandava, de Paul, and Molina form a deep trio to shield the defense and recycle possession. de Paul uses his immense work rate to press in a mid-block and help the team win it back high up the pitch. Ahead of them, Koke, M. Llorente, and Gallagher operate in the half-spaces to drive the ball forward. Koke works to find the feet of the striker, while Gallagher uses his pressing intensity to trigger a press as soon as the ball is lost. This group is designed to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition.

The attacking front consists of two forwards in a partnership with Griezmann and J. Álvarez. Griezmann often drops into the hole to link play and create space for his partner. J. Álvarez looks to make runs in behind to hit in behind on the transition. Without wide players to spread wide, the team must combine in tight spaces and use quick passes to split the defence with a through ball. They press from the front to force a long ball and look to attack the far post with quick movements.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By having six players in the middle, Atlético can easily win the second ball and maintain control. The ability to press high in coordinated waves with such a large group also makes it very hard for opponents to build out from the back. This lineup allows the team to pin the last defender and keep the ball in the final third.

This 2-6-2 lineup is built for total dominance in the middle of the park. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play through the center and need to be suffocated.
