Starting Lineup

Wimmer · Sabitzer · Baumgartner · Prass · Arnautovic · Stöger · Seiwald · Posch · Hedl · Danso · Lienhart

To implement a highly vertical style of play, Austria employs a 5-2-3 formation. The team focuses on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. This lineup is built to press aggressively and move the ball quickly through the lines to exploit spaces in transition.

Hedl sits in goal to command the defensive area. The back line functions as a back five that can defend in a mid block or push up to a high line. Seiwald holds the central position to protect the area in front of the goal. Lienhart and Danso act as the wider center backs, providing aerial strength and covering the spaces when the wing backs push forward. Posch and Prass operate as attacking wing backs, tasked to spread wide and provide the necessary width. They are expected to overlap the wingers and whip it in toward the central area.

The midfield consists of a two man pairing with Sabitzer and Stöger. Sabitzer uses his driving runs and passing range to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attackers. Stöger works to link the play and recycle possession to maintain control. This duo must work hard to squeeze the space in the center and pick up runners from the opposition. They are responsible for winning the second ball and immediately looking to find the front three to start a break.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Arnautovic serves as the target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Wimmer and Baumgartner operate as wide attackers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. This attacking formation is designed to create runs in behind and allow for quick combinations. The front three work to press from the front, trying to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

A primary tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads. When Posch and Prass push high, they combine with the wingers to overwhelm the opposition full backs. Additionally, Austria can press in coordinated waves, with the front three and the midfield duo working together to deny the turn of the opposition players. This high pressure allows the team to win the ball back in dangerous areas and attack quickly.

This 5-2-3 formation provides Austria with a solid defensive base while remaining a threat on the break. It is a formation best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
