Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Dovbyk · Dybala · Soulé · Angeliño · Pellegrini · Paredes · Koné · Ndicka · Hummels · Mancini · SvilarRoma looks to overwhelm opponents through high intensity and heavy numbers in the final third using a 3-3-4. This lineup is built to play a vertical game that forces mistakes high up the pitch and punishes teams in transition. The goal is to pin the opposition back and use massive numbers to break the lines.
Svilar plays behind a back three that maintains a high line to squeeze the space. Hummels acts as the central defender to organize the line and win the header, while Mancini plays as the right centre-back to cover the space behind the midfield. Ndicka plays as the left centre-back to provide coverage and ability to defend man-to-man. This defensive unit works to win it back high up the pitch and force a long ball from the opposition.
In the center of the pitch, Paredes acts as a single pivot to protect the back three and recycle possession. Koné and Pellegrini operate as the two central midfielders to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Koné uses his power to carry the ball forward, while Pellegrini looks to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines. They must work hard to track back and deny the turn if possession is lost.
The attacking front line uses a four man group to stretch the defence. Dybala plays as a second striker in the hole to find pockets of space, while Dovbyk acts as a target man to hold up the ball. Angeliño plays on the left and Soulé plays on the right to provide width. This allows Roma to attack in combinations with wide players cutting inside to create overloads. The forwards press from the front to trigger a press and win the ball back quickly.
This formation offers Roma great strength in wide overloads because of the numbers in the attacking half. The team can create numerical superiority in midfield when the wide attackers pull defenders out of position. The speed of transition is a major advantage as they can hit in behind on the transition with four players already moving forward.
Roma uses this 3-3-4 to dominate games through aggressive pressing and heavy attacking numbers. It is a high risk formation best suited for games where they need to break down a deep low block.
