Chelsea aims to control the game through a heavy midfield presence using a 4-5-1. This formation is built to dominate the center of the pitch and squeeze the space in the middle while maintaining a platform to transition quickly. The lineup focuses on keeping players close together to make it difficult for the opposition to play through the lines.

Sanchez starts in goal to oversee the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four with Gusto and Cucurella providing width. Gusto acts as an attacking full back to support the flanks, while Cucurella provides defensive cover on the left. In the center, Fofana and Colwill act as the main defenders, with Colwill often playing as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. This unit works to hold the line and minimize gaps between the defenders.

The midfield is the engine of the Chelsea team, utilizing a five man group to control the tempo. Enzo and Caicedo work as a double pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. Enzo often drops between the centre backs to receive, while Caicedo uses his high pressing intensity to disrupt the opposition. Ahead of them, Sancho, Palmer, and Neto occupy the spaces between the lines. Palmer acts as a central playmaker to connect the midfield and attack, while Sancho and Neto provide energy to press in a mid block and transition into the final third.

Jackson plays as a lone striker to lead the line. He acts as a pressing centre forward to force the opposition back line into mistakes. The attack relies on the wide midfielders, Neto and Sancho, to provide service and create numbers in the box. The team builds play by moving the ball through the midfield before looking for runs in behind. Jackson must hold up the ball to allow the late arrivals of Palmer and the wide players to join the attack.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to control the ball. The presence of five players in the middle allows Chelsea to compress the midfield and force a long ball from the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition when the ball is won by the double pivot, allowing the team to hit the opposition in behind quickly.

The 4-5-1 formation provides a compact and difficult unit to break down through the middle. It is a lineup best suited for games where Chelsea needs to control possession or face an opponent that relies heavily on central passing.
