Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SOMMER (Martinez / Di Gennaro) · ACERBI (De Vrij) · PAVARD (Bisseck / Darmian) · BASTONI (Bisseck / Palacios) · DARMIAN (Dumfries) · DIMARCO (Carlos Augusto) · CALHANOGLU (Asllani) · MKHYTARIAN (Zielinski) · BARELLA (Frattesi) · LAUTARO (Taremi / Correa) · THURAM (Taremi / Arnautovic)Inter plays with a clear intent to control the center of the pitch using a 3-5-2 formation. The lineup is built to play a high press and move the ball forward with verticality. Players seek to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly progress through the thirds to catch opponents out of position.
SOMMER acts as the last line of defense, often sweeping behind a high line to clear the lines. A back three consists of ACERBI, BASTONI, and PAVARD. ACERBI sits in the center to win the header and defend zonally. BASTONI plays as a ball playing defender on the left, using his passing range to play out from the back and find teammates. PAVARD occupies the right side of the back three, providing cover and helping to squeeze the space. The defensive unit works together to maintain a compact defensive block and deny the turn to opposition attackers.
The midfield functions as a diamond with a sitting midfielder and acts as the engine for Inter Milan. CALHANOGLU sits deep as a playmaker, using his passing range to switch play and recycle possession. BARELLA works to carry the ball forward and press in a mid-block, while MKHYTARIAN operates as the advanced tip to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Providing the width are DIMARCO and DARMIAN. DIMARCO pushes high as an attacking wing back to overlap and whip it in, while DARMIAN works to cover the right side.
Up front, the team utilizes a two-man partnership. LAUTARO uses his pressing intensity to lead the attack and force a long ball from the opposition. THURAM provides a physical presence to hold up the ball and play one-two combinations with his partner. These two forwards work to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. They often look to hit in behind on the transition or receive on the half-turn to drive at the defense.
One major strength of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield. By crowding the central areas, the team can compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opponent. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads. When DIMARCO or DARMIAN push up, they isolate wide players in one on one situations or create space for cutbacks from the byline.
This 3-5-2 formation is perfectly suited for teams looking to dominate the central zone and attack with pace. It works best against opponents that struggle to deal with constant pressure in the middle of the pitch.
