Bologna Football Formation
Starting Lineup
SKORUPSKI (Ravaglia / Bagnolini) · MIRANDA (Lykogiannis) · BEUKEMA (Erlic) · CASALE (Lucumì) · POSCH (De Silvestri / Holm) · FREULER (N. Moro) · AEBISCHER (El Azzouzi / Pobega) · FABBIAN (Pobega / Ferguson) · ORSOLINI (Odgaard / Cambiaghi) · NDOYE (Karlsson / Iling Jr) · CASTRO (Dallinga / Odgaard)Bologna focuses on a disciplined defensive block and quick transitions through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to remain compact and frustrate opponents before hitting them on the break. The team aims to control the central areas and force the opposition into wide areas where they can be contained.
In goal, Skorupski maintains the defensive line and organizes the unit. The back four consists of Miranda at left back and Posch at right back, who both provide width when needed but mostly focus on defending the flanks. In the center, Beukema and Casale form a sturdy pair of central defenders. Beukema provides aerial strength and coverage, while Casale works to intercept passes and stop runners. This back line stays narrow to protect the central zone and keeps a disciplined distance from the midfield.
The midfield operates as a five man unit that covers the entire width of the pitch. Freuler and Aebischer play as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Freuler acts as a carrier to move the ball forward, while Aebischer helps to recycle possession and maintain the team position. Fabbian connects the midfield to the attack, often working in the half spaces to find pockets of room. On the flanks, Ndoye and Orsolini provide energy, with Ndoye working to track back and Orsolini looking to drive forward and stretch the defense.
Bologna utilizes a lone striker in Castro to lead the line. Castro acts as a pressing centre forward, working to harass the opposition back line and disrupt their build up play. When the team wins the ball, the attack moves quickly through the wide players or via direct balls to find the feet of the striker. Orsolini and Ndoye often look to cut inside to create central overloads, allowing the team to attack in combinations during transitions.
This formation offers several tactical advantages for Bologna. The midfield provides a strong central presence that makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. The team can also use the energy of Orsolini and Ndoye to create wide overloads when they press high in coordinated waves. Compactness when defending makes it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.
Bologna uses this 4-5-1 to remain defensively solid while being dangerous on the counter. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high line.
