Di Gregorio operates as the goalkeeper, standing behind a flat back four. Bremer and Gatti act as the central defenders, with Bremer providing aerial strength and Gatti playing as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Danilo plays as the right back to hold the line, while Cambiaso functions as an attacking full back on the left. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and keep the team compact when the opposition tries to build play.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide balance. Douglas Luiz operates in the central area to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball from the defenders. Thuram plays alongside him as a carrier who can drive forward with the ball to break the line.
