Starting Lineup

Arsenal look to win the ball high up the pitch and move it vertically using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is designed to play with a high press to squeeze the space in the opposition half and create chances through quick transitions. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence before finding through balls to the front three.

Raya stays in goal to command the area and start play from the back. The defensive unit functions as a back five where Rice plays as the central defender to provide stability and hold the line. Saliba operates as a ball playing defender with great recovery speed to cover the space behind. G. Magalhães stays alongside him to win the header and provide physical presence in the box. Zinchenko acts as a left wing back to push high and provide width, while Timber works as a right wing back to overlap the winger. This back five can sit deep or step up to catch the opposition offside.

The midfield features a double pivot that connects the defence and the attack. Ødegaard plays as a playmaker with a high passing range to find the forwards, often dropping deep to receive on the half turn. Havertz works as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and make late runs into the box. They must work to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition. Their movement helps to recycle possession and find ways to play through the lines.

The attack uses three players across the front to pin the last defender. G. Jesus acts as a pressing centre forward who looks to link up play between the lines and hold up the ball. Saka stays wide on the right but cuts inside as an inverted winger to use his dribbling style. Sterling moves from the left flank to cut inside and join the central presence in the box. This front three works to press the goalkeeper and force a long ball. They create many chances by making runs in behind and receiving cutbacks from the byline.

A major advantage for Arsenal is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. The formation also allows for wide overloads because Timber and Zinchenko can push high to support the wingers. This creates numerical superiority in the final third and forces the opposition to defend in wide areas.

This 5-2-3 formation is built to dominate territory and strike with speed on the transition. It is best suited for facing opponents that try to play short from the back.
