Genoa plays with a high press and vertical style using a 3-5-2. The team looks to win the ball and move quickly through the thirds to catch the opponent out of position. This formation is built to control the center of the pitch and use the width of the field through wide midfielders.

Gollini stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back three features Vasquez on the left, Bani in the center, and De Winter on the right. Vasquez and De Winter act as wide central defenders who can push out to meet attackers, while Bani stays central to protect the zone and win the header. This unit works to maintain a compact shape and can shift across the pitch to cover gaps.

The midfield works to dominate the center of the pitch with a three man core. Badelj sits in a deep role to shield the defence and protect the central defenders. Martin and Zanoli operate as the central engine, with Martin able to carry the ball forward and Zanoli to support the play. Frendrup plays on the left to press aggressively and cover the wide area, while Messias works on the right to provide width and connect the midfield to the attack. This group works to squeeze the space in the middle and win it back high up the pitch.

Pinamonti and Vitinha lead the line as a pair of forwards. Pinamonti often acts as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off for his partner. Vitinha looks to make runs in behind the defence to exploit the space left by a high line. These two combine in tight spaces and use the delivery from Frendrup and Messias to attack the box. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and prevent them from building from the back.

This formation provides a clear advantage through numerical superiority in the central midfield area. By having five players in the middle, Genoa can often bypass the midfield of the opposition. The wide players also allow for wide overloads when they push up to support the attack, creating more passing lanes and isolating wide players in one on one situations.
