Vivían uses his aerial strength to win headers, while Paredes works to cover space and intercept passes. The unit works to hold the line and keep the distance between the defense and midfield small.

The midfield consists of a double pivot. De Galarreta operates as a deep-lying playmaker, looking to recycle possession and find the forwards with his passing range. Vesga sits alongside him to shield the defense and win the second ball. This pair connects the back four to the attack, with De Galarreta looking to play through the lines and Vesga working to disrupt the opponent in the middle of the pitch.

The front line is very aggressive with four attackers working high. Nico Williams and Iñaki Williams act as wide wingers who look to stretch the defense and run in behind. Nico Williams uses his dribbling to take on defenders, while Iñaki Williams uses his pace to hit in behind on the transition. Sancet and Guruzeta lead the line as a central partnership. Sancet can drop deep to link play, while Guruzeta acts to hold up the ball and occupy the center backs.

Athletic benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Having four players in the attacking line allows them to pin the last defender and squeeze the space in the opponent's half.
