Starting Lineup

Dybala · Soulé · Dovbyk · Celik · Ndicka · Mancini · Angeliño · Cristante · Paredes · Pellegrini · Ryan

Roma aims to dominate the ball through a high press and heavy central presence with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the pitch and control the tempo by using a massive midfield bank to win the ball high up the pitch. By pushing more bodies forward, Roma intends to pin the opposition deep and use central combinations to break the lines.

Ryan stays between the posts as the lone man in goal while the team operates with a very high defensive line. Ndicka and Mancini act as the two central defenders, where Mancini uses his aerial strength to win the header in defensive duels. These two must be ready to sweep behind the high line and cover huge amounts of space if the opposition tries to hit in behind on the transition. The defensive unit functions by pushing up to squeeze the space, leaving the two center-backs to defend large areas of the pitch alone.

A five man midfield unit provides the engine for this formation. Celik acts as the single pivot to shield the defence, while Angeliño and Paredes work to control the ball and progress through the thirds. Paredes uses his wide passing range to switch play, while Cristante works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Dybala operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to receive on the half-turn and create chances. This midfield bank is designed to win the second ball and ensure the team always has a way to recycle possession.

The front line utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Dovbyk acts as the target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Soulé and Pellegrini occupy the wide areas, where they can either pull wide to spread the defence or cut inside to create overloads. This front three will press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The goal is to create runs in behind and use link-up play between the lines to find Dovbyk in central areas.

One major advantage of this lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows Roma to control the middle of the pitch. The team can also use the wide positioning of Soulé and Pellegrini to isolate wide players in one on one situations. This formation creates a lot of central density, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk high reward system built for aggressive ball dominance. It is best suited for games where the opponent sits deep and allows Roma to control the rhythm of the match.
