Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Svilar / Ryan · Ndicka / Hummels · Mancini / Hermoso · Angelino / Dahl · Saud / Celik · Le Fee / Pellegrini · Kone / Paredes · Dybala / Baldanzi · Soule / Costa · Saelemaekers / SES · Dovbyk / ShomurodovRoma aims to play a highly vertical and aggressive game using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to catch opponents on the break and punish them with quick transitions. The goal is to use the front four to pin the opposition back and create constant pressure.
Ryan Svilar starts in goal to anchor the defense. The back line operates as a flat back four, with Saud at right back and Angelino at left back. Mancini and Ndicka form the central pairing, with Mancini acting as a dominant force in the air and Ndicka providing cover. When Roma pushes high, the full backs need to track back quickly to prevent long balls from finding the wings. The defensive unit works to hold a compact shape when they are not pressing.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Kone and Le Fee occupy the two central roles, with Kone acting as the carrier to drive the ball forward. Le Fee connects the defensive and attacking lines by finding space between the lines. This duo must work hard to win the second ball and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle. They are responsible for recycling possession when the attack stalls.
The attacking unit is extremely potent, using two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. Dovbyk operates as a target man to hold up the ball, while Dybala plays as a second striker in the hole to create chances. Saelemaekers stays wide on the left to provide width, while Soule occupies the right flank as an inverted winger to cut inside. This front four is designed to score through combinations and quick runs in behind the defense.
Roma gains a massive advantage from the speed of transition when moving from defense to attack. The wide players, Saelemaekers and Soule, can isolate defenders in one on one situations once they receive the ball. Another strength is the ability to pin the last defender with the movement of Dovbyk and Dybala. This creates space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box and add another layer of threat.
This 4-2-4 formation is designed for a high risk, high reward style of play. It is best suited for games where Roma needs to break down a deep block or exploit a high defensive line through quick, direct play.
