This lineup relies on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The tactical intent is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence while keeping a solid base to prevent being caught on the counter.
Onana operates between the posts to start the build up from the back. The defensive line uses a back three of De Ligt, Licha, and Casemiro to maintain control. De Ligt and Licha act as the central defenders to win the header and clear the lines, while Casemiro sits deeper to cover the space behind the midfield. Shaw acts as an attacking wing back on the left to provide width, while Dalot plays as an attacking wing back on the right to overlap the winger.
The midfield consists of a two man unit designed to control the tempo. Mainoo works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often picking up the ball to carry the ball forward into the final third. Bruno plays as the creative engine, looking to play through the lines and find the forwards with his passing range. They must work hard to squeeze the space in front of the back three and prevent the opposition from playing between the lines.
In the final third, the attacking trio provides constant movement to disrupt the back line. Rashford plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and find shooting lanes, while Amad stays wider on the right to stretch the play. Hojlund acts as the lone striker, using his physicality to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. This front line works to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
Manchester United gain a significant advantage through wide overloads when Dalot and Shaw push high to support the wingers. The formation also allows for a compact block when defending in a mid-block, making it hard for opponents to find space centrally. The speed of transition from the midfield to the front three allows the team to hit in behind on the transition with great effect.
This formation creates a hard unit to break down through its defensive depth and wide presence. It is best suited for games against teams that play with high defensive lines or those that struggle to deal with rapid counter attacks.
