Roma looks to play with a high press and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike rapidly when the opposition is out of position. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence while keeping a compact unit when the ball is lost.

Ryan starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back five functions with Paredes acting as the central defender to sweep behind a high line. Mancini and N'Dicka serve as the wide centre-backs, with Mancini providing aerial strength and N'Dicka covering the space behind. Celik and Anjelino act as attacking wing backs to provide width and push high into the final third. This defensive block can drop into a low block if the team needs to protect a lead or sit deep to deny space behind.

The midfield operates with a two-man central unit consisting of Pellegrini and Kone. Pellegrini acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive line to the attack. Kone works to shield the defence and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. They must stay close together to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines and to ensure they can quickly recycle possession when it is regained.

Roma utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Dovbyk acts as a pressing centre-forward who can hold up the ball and link play with the wide players. Soule operates on the left as an inverted winger who likes to cut inside to create chances, while Dybala plays on the right and looks to find space between the lines. This attacking trio aims to create runs in behind or pull wide to create space for late runs from the midfield.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the wing backs Celik and Anjelino. This puts immense pressure on the opposition full backs and allows Roma to spread wide during the build up. Another strength is the speed of transition when the midfield duo of Pellegrini and Kone wins the ball back high up the pitch. This allows the front three to attack the space before the opposition can recover.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a strong defensive base while allowing for intense attacking pressure. It is a setup best suited for games against teams that play a high line or struggle to deal with quick vertical passing.
