Krstovic (9)Lecce aims to play with a direct and defensive identity using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on being difficult to break down while using the width of the pitch to catch teams on the break. The team looks to stay compact and use the energy of the wing backs to transition from a deep position into the final third.
W. Falcone starts between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit functions as a back five with F. Baschirotto, Y. Ramadani, and A. PELMARD forming a central block. F. Baschirotto provides aerial strength and physical presence in the middle, while Y. Ramadani acts as a covering defender. The wing backs, F. GUILBERT and P. Dorgu, are tasked with providing much of the width. F. GUILBERT works to overlap on the right, while P. Dorgu uses his pace to push up the left flank. This five man line can shift to a mid block to deny space between the lines.
The midfield operates with a two man central pairing consisting of R. Oudin and F. MARCHWINSKI. This double pivot is responsible for shielding the defense and recycling possession when the team wins the ball back. F. MARCHWINSKI works to connect the defense to the attack, while R. Oudin helps to press in the middle of the pitch. They must work hard to cover the space left behind when the wing backs push forward. The pair aims to win the second ball to allow the attacking unit to move up the pitch quickly.
In the attacking third, Lecce utilizes three attackers to stretch the opposition. N. Krstovic acts as a pressing centre-forward who leads the line and looks to hold up the ball for his teammates. L. Banda operates as an inverted winger on the left, cutting inside to find space, while S. Pierotti stays wide on the right to deliver crosses. The team builds attacks by moving the ball quickly to the wings or playing through the lines to find the striker. This setup creates many runs in behind to exploit a high defensive line.
Lecce gains a significant advantage through the ability to create wide overloads when F. GUILBERT and P. Dorgu join the front three. The formation also provides great compactness when defending in a low block, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps. The speed of transition allows the team to hit teams on the break using the pace of L. Banda and S. Pierotti.
This 5-2-3 formation is built to be a defensively solid unit that relies on quick counter attacks. It is best suited for games against possession based teams where Lecce can sit deep and exploit space behind the defense.
