Starting Lineup

DCC acts as a ball playing defender to find the feet of the striker, and Niakhate remains dominant in the air to clear the lines when facing direct play.

The midfield is a double pivot designed to provide a bridge between the defense and the attack. Matic sits deep to shield the defense and win the second ball. Veretout works to connect the lines, often carrying the ball forward to break through the midfield. This pair must be very disciplined to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle, especially since the rest of the team stays very high up the pitch, leaving space behind them.

The front line uses two forwards in a partnership and wide wingers to stretch the defense. AMN and Zaha act as wide wingers to stretch the width of the pitch. Zaha often looks to cut inside to create goalscoring chances. Lacazette and Rayon Chercon operate in the center as a strike duo. Lacazette uses his ability to hold up the ball and his clinical finishing to pin the last defender. They press from the front to force the opposition to play long, allowing the rest of the team to win the ball back.

A major advantage for Lyon is the ability to create wide overloads and isolate wide players in one on one situations. The presence of four attackers makes it very hard for a back four to track all the runs and maintain their position. They also use a high press in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack with speed.
