Starting Lineup

SK Rapid relies on a heavy verticality to catch opponents off guard, operating within a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball and moving it forward as quickly as possible to exploit gaps in the opposition. By committing many bodies into the attacking third, the team looks to overwhelm the back line through rapid transitions and directness.

Hedl sits between the posts to manage the defensive unit. The defensive line consists of only two central defenders, Cvetkovic and Raux Yao, who must maintain a high line to squeeze the space. Because there are no full backs, Cvetkovic and Raux Yao act as ball playing defenders who must be prepared to cover large amounts of grass. They need to win the second ball and stay alert to any runs in behind, as the lack of wide protection means they often defend in isolation.

The midfield is composed of a double pivot and two advanced players to bridge the gap. Bolla and J. Auer operate as the central core, where Bolla acts to shield the defence while J. Auer looks to drive forward with the ball. These two work to win it back high up the pitch and recycle possession quickly. Further up, Oswald and Grgic act as two tens in the half spaces, tasked to carry the ball forward and find the feet of the strikers. Their job is to connect the midfield to the front four and find pockets of space between the lines.

A heavy attacking presence is maintained with four players across the front. Burgstaller and Beljo operate as a two forwards partnership in the center, providing a physical presence to hold up the ball. Jansson and Seidl act as wide wingers who pull wide to stretch the defence. This front four works to press the opposition back line from the front, forcing long balls. The goal is to create runs in behind or allow the attackers to combine in tight spaces to score quickly.

SK Rapid offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to overwhelm teams in transition. The sheer number of players in the final third allows for wide overloads and constant pressure on the opposition goal. This formation also provides a high degree of verticality, making it difficult for opponents to settle once they lose possession.
