Romagnoli, who acts as a ball playing defender with strong reading of the game. M. Gila sits as the right center back to provide cover. On the flanks, attacking wing backs A. Marusic and N. Tavares push high to provide width and cross the ball into the box. This setup allows the defenders to stay close together and defend zonally when the opposition attacks.

The midfield works as a three-man midfield with a carrier and a holding presence. M. Guendouzi sits in the pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. To his sides, M. Zaccagni and G. Isaksen operate in the half-spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Guendouzi works to intercept passes and recycle possession, while Zaccagni and Isaksen look to carry the ball forward and find the feet of the attackers. They must track back to help the wing backs when the team is out of possession.

Lazio uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the opposition. T. Castellanos and B. DIA operate as the front two, looking to make runs in behind the defense. Castellanos often acts as a pressing center forward to force long balls from the opponent. B. DIA works to hold up the ball and link up play with the midfield. The wing backs, Marusic and Tavares, provide the width necessary to pull the defense apart, creating space for the forwards to cut inside or exploit gaps in the channels.

One major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending in a mid-block. Lazio can easily shift into a narrow defensive block to deny the turn to the opposition playmakers. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs overlap the midfielders.
