Starting Lineup

Lautaro · Barella · Mkhitaryan · Darmian · Thuram · Dimarco · Pavard · Bastoni · Acerbi · Calhanoglu · Martinez

Inter focus on controlling games through a high press and rapid transitions in a 3-5-2. This formation is built to squeeze the pitch and use central players to move the ball through the thirds quickly. The Inter lineup relies on heavy verticality to punish teams that fail to keep a compact shape.

Martinez sits between the lines to act as a sweeper behind a high defensive line. The back three consists of Pavard, Acerbi, and Bastoni who defend zonally to close down passing lanes. Pavard acts as a right-sided defender to cover the space when the wing back pushes up, while Bastoni is a ball playing defender who can step into midfield to create an extra man. Acerbi provides aerial strength and stability in the center to win the second ball.

A three man midfield works to dominate the center of the pitch. Calhanoglu acts as a deep lying playmaker who dictates the tempo and searches for long balls to the forwards. Barella provides energy to press aggressively and carry the ball forward, while Mkhitaryan connects the defensive and attacking lines with clever movement. This midfield unit works to compress the midfield and win possession high up the pitch.

The attacking unit uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. Lautaro and Thuram work in close combinations to find gaps in the opposition back line. Lautaro often works as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball from the defenders, while Thuram uses his physicality to hold up the ball and lay it off. Dimarco and Darmian provide the width by acting as attacking wing backs who overlap the winger and whip it in toward the box.

Inter gain a major advantage through numerical superiority in midfield which makes it hard for opponents to play through the center. The team also benefits from wide overloads when Dimarco and Darmian push high to pin the last defender. This allows the central players to find space between the lines.

The 3-5-2 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and attacking threat. It is best suited for games where the team needs to control the central areas and strike quickly on the transition.
