Starting Lineup

Gellagher · Griezmann · Koke · Llorente · Alvarez · Lino · Barrios · Mandava · Gimenez · Normand · Musso

Focusing on a high press and quick transitions, Atlético utilizes a 3-4-3 formation to unsettle opponents. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike rapidly once possession is regained. The team relies on heavy work rates to maintain intensity and disrupt the rhythm of the opposition.

Musso operates between the posts to organize the back line. A back three consisting of Mandava, Gimenez, and Normand provides a solid base. Gimenez acts as the central pillar, while Mandava and Normand cover the wide areas to ensure the defensive unit remains compact. When the team pushes forward, these defenders must hold a high line to squeeze the space and prevent long balls from finding space behind them.

The midfield works in a central pairing with Barrios and Koke. Koke, the captain (C), directs the play and connects the defensive unit to the attack by recycling possession. Barrios works alongside him to shield the defence and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. On the flanks, Lino and Llorente act as wide midfielders who provide width and support the defensive block. Lino and Llorente must track back to help the defenders while also being ready to carry the ball forward in transition.

In the final third, Atlético employs three attackers to stretch the defence. Alvarez operates as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and force mistakes. Gellagher and Griezmann play as wide attackers, with Griezmann often cutting inside to create chances and Gellagher using his intensity to press from the front. This front line is designed to create runs in behind and deliver crosses into the box, using the movement of the wingers to isolate defenders one on one.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger a press. The team also creates wide overloads when Lino and Llorente push up to support the wingers. This allows Atlético to control the width of the pitch and force the opposition to defend in wide areas.

This 3-4-3 formation is ideal for a team that wants to dominate through high energy and aggressive pressing. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
