The team prioritizes defensive solidity to frustrate the opposition before looking to exploit spaces left behind by attacking sides.

W. Benitez guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back five consists of J. Schouten, R. FLAMINGO, and O. Boscagli in the center, with S. Dest and Mauro Junior acting as attacking wing backs on the flanks. J. Schouten holds the central position to organize the line, while R. FLAMINGO and O. Boscagli provide cover and win headers. S. Dest and Mauro Junior are expected to push up the pitch to provide width, but they must track back to form a five man line when the ball is lost. The defensive unit works to stay narrow and protect the central area.

The midfield operates as a flat four to protect the defensive line. J. Veerman acts as the deep lying playmaker, sitting in front of the defense to recycle possession and spray passes wide. N. Lang and J. Bakayoko occupy the central spaces to press in a mid block and win the second ball. M. Tillman provides extra support to connect the midfield to the attack, often looking to carry the ball forward or play through the lines. This group works to squeeze the space between the lines and deny the opposition time on the ball.

In the attacking phase, PSV relies on a lone striker in R. Pepi. He acts as a pressing centre forward to force the opposition back line into mistakes and hold up the ball to allow the midfield to join the play. The team builds attacks through the wide areas, where S. Dest and Mauro Junior look to deliver crosses. When the team breaks quickly, the wingers and attacking midfielders look to run in behind the defense to support R. Pepi in his runs.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to defend in a very compact shape, making it hard for opponents to play through the middle. The presence of S. Dest and Mauro Junior also allows for wide overloads when the team wins the ball back high up the pitch. PSV can also transition very quickly from a low block to an attacking position by utilizing the passing range of J. Veerman.

This 5-4-1 formation creates a very difficult defensive unit that is hard to break down centrally. It is best suited for matches against dominant sides where the team needs to absorb pressure and exploit space on the break.
