Plymouth Football Formation
Starting Lineup
HAZARD 60% (Grimshaw) · EDWARDS 50% (Palsson/Sorinola) · SZUCZ 50% (Pleguezuelo) · GIBSON 70% (Galloway) · MUMBA 70% (Ogbeta) · RANDELL 50% (Al Hajj) · GYABI 70% (Wright) · WHITTAKER 90% · HOUGHTON 50% (Forshaw/Roberts) · CISSOKO 80% (Bundu/Issaka) · OBAFEMI 50% (Hardie/Tijani)Plymouth look to dominate games through extreme verticality and high pressing, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in their own half and win the ball back high up the pitch. By committing many players forward, Plymouth aim to create constant pressure and force mistakes from the back.
Hazard sits between the posts to command his area. The defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Szucz and Gibson acting as the central defenders. Because there are only two players in the back line, Szucz and Gibson must play a high line to squeeze the space and prevent long balls. They act as the primary shield, needing to be extremely fast to cover the space behind them when the team pushes up.
The midfield is the engine of this formation, functioning as a five man block. Edwards and Mumba act as the central pairing to control the middle, while Houghton provides extra presence to help recycle possession. In the half spaces, Randell and Gyabi operate as attacking midfielders to link the play. This group is tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch, using the midfield mass to congest the center and force the ball wide.
The attack features three players across the front to pin the last defender. Obafemi leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and provide a focal point. On the flanks, Cissoko and Whittaker act as wide wingers who stretch the defence. Cissoko plays on the left while Whittaker operates on the right, looking to cut inside or receive the ball in one on one situations to drive at the goal.
One major advantage of this Plymouth lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having five midfielders and three attackers, the team can swarm the opponent and win it back quickly in advanced areas. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the attacking third, which makes it very difficult for opponents to defend against the constant runs and combinations.
This formation is built for high risk and high reward football. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under intense pressure.
