Stoke focuses on a heavy verticality to hit teams in transition, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition through high numbers in the attacking third and a congested middle section. The team looks to win the ball back quickly and move it forward with pace to catch the defense before they can set their lines.

Johansson stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back line consists of a narrow two man unit with Gibson and Phillips acting as the central defenders. They must stay alert to cover the space behind them since there are no full backs to provide deep cover. Gibson and Phillips function as ball playing defenders who need to be dominant in the air and ready to clear the lines when the team is under pressure. They often play a high line to squeeze the space and keep the team compact.

In the middle of the pitch, Stoke employs a massive five man midfield to control the center. Tchamadeu and Bocat act as the central engine, with Tchamadeu playing as a left sided carrier and Bocat providing stability. Thompson works alongside them to help protect the two defenders. Ahead of them, Burger and Junho operate in the half spaces to link the midfield to the front three. This setup allows the team to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly through the center.

The attacking front three uses a wide and aggressive presence to stretch the defense. Koumas plays on the left and Manhoef occupies the right, both acting as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. Cannon leads the line as a pressing centre forward to force mistakes from the opposition. The formation is designed to create runs in behind and allow the wide players to receive the ball in one on one situations. Cannon works to find the feet of his teammates or hold up the ball to bring the midfielders into the play.

A major tactical advantage for Stoke is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to pass through the middle. The team can also create wide overloads by having Junho and Burger push high to support the wingers. This helps the side to win it back high up the pitch and launch immediate attacks. The combination of a crowded midfield and a fast front three makes them very dangerous on the break.
