Starting Lineup

Liverpool operates with a heavy focus on defensive solidity and directness in their 4-5-1 lineup. This formation is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the right moment to strike. Davies guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back four functions as a flat back four where Mabaya acts as a defensive wing back on the right to help cover the flank. On the left, Beck provides width but must track back quickly to support the defense. Jonas and Nallo occupy the central roles as the two centre-backs, with Jonas acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back while Nallo is there to win the header and cover the space behind.

In the middle of the park, Liverpool utilizes a three-man midfield with a double pivot to protect the center. McConnell and Morton sit deep as the two holding midfielders to shield the defense and pick up runners. Ahead of them, Ngumoha, Nyoni, and Kone-Doherty form a line of three that connects the defensive and attacking lines. Nyoni and Kone-Doherty act as the central creators who look to carry the ball forward, while Ngumoha operates in the left half-space to press aggressively and win the second ball.

The attacking side relies on a lone striker, Danns, who plays as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. Danns is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The team builds the attack through quick combinations in transition, looking to hit in behind the defense once the ball is recovered. The goal is to spread wide to stretch the defense before finding the feet of the striker or delivering a cross into the box.

This formation offers Liverpool a significant advantage through the compactness when defending in a mid-block. By keeping the lines close together, they make it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines.
