Starting Lineup

Suurbier · Krol · Koeman · Rijkaard · Haan · Neeskens · Rep · Rensenbrink · Van Basten · Cruyff · Van Breukelen

The Netherlands seeks to dominate through a high press and quick verticality in a 4-5-1. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and transition with pace. By crowding the center, the Oranje aim to control the tempo and force the opposition into mistakes.

Van Breukelen starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back four sits in a flat back four to defend zonally. Koeman functions as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back, while Rijkaard provides cover and remains ready to sweep behind the high line. Suurbier and Krol act as full backs who can push up to support the attack. The defensive unit works to hold the line and ensure they do not get caught out when the team pushes forward.

The midfield is a dense block consisting of five players. Haan and Neeskens act as a double pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. Neeskens brings intense pressing to trigger a press high up the pitch. Cruyff plays in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines, using his vision to play through the lines. Rep and Rensenbrink operate in the half spaces to provide width and pull wide to stretch the defence. This group works to compress the midfield and squeeze the space.

Van Basten leads the line as a lone striker and a target man. He is capable of holding up the ball and finding the feet of the midfielders when they arrive late into the box. Rep and Rensenbrink act as wide attackers who can cut inside to create central overloads. The team builds play by moving the ball from the defence to the midfield before looking to hit in behind on the transition. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow Van Basten to combine with the advancing midfielders.

A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the team to control the ball. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play. Additionally, the combination of Suurbier and Rensenbrink allows for wide overloads to create chances from the flanks.

The Netherlands uses this 4-5-1 formation to rely on a heavy press and quick transition. It is most effective when facing opponents that struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle a high block.
