Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
raya · saliba · zinchenko · calafiori · timber · tomi · tierney · rice · odegaard · saka · havertzArsenal focuses on a high press and heavy ball control using a 4-5-1. This formation relies on suffocating the opposition in their own half and using quick verticality once the ball is won. The Gunners look to control the tempo through a compact midfield unit that can transition into a more aggressive attacking posture during spells of possession.
Raya plays between the posts to organize the back line. Arsenal uses a flat back four that maintains a high line to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch. Saliba operates as a ball playing defender on the right while Timber provides cover on the right of the central pairing. Tomi acts as a dominant presence in the air at the left of the central line to intercept long balls. Tierney plays as an attacking full back on the left to provide width and help the team build out from the back.
A three man midfield with a carrier sits at the base of the unit to provide security. Rice acts as the primary shield for the defense, using his high pressing intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch. Calafiori occupies a deeper role to help build play and provide cover when the full backs push up. Zinchenko operates in the middle to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deeper to receive the ball. Odegaard plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to create through balls and find the feet of the attackers.
Havertz acts as a lone striker and a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opposition back line. Saka plays as an inverted winger on the right, cutting inside to create scoring chances and using his dribbling style to beat his marker. The attack relies on link up play between the lines, specifically through the movements of Odegaard. Saka and Tierney provide width to stretch the defence, while Havertz works to hold up the ball and wait for support from the advancing midfield.
One major advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, led by Havertz and Odegaard. The midfield setup allows for numerical superiority in the center, making it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Arsenal can also use the speed of transition to catch teams out when they move from a defensive block into an attacking phase.
This formation is built to dominate possession and choke the opponent in their own half. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and try to defend in a narrow block.
