Palmer operates as the lone man between the posts to protect the goal. Ahead of him, the defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Ajayi and Bartley. These two central defenders must be ready to cover large spaces and win headers when the team drops into a low block. Because there are no full backs, Ajayi and Bartley often have to defend one on one or work together to squeeze the space when the ball moves wide.

The midfield works in a central block to manage the middle of the pitch. Racic acts as a pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession, while Heggem and Furlong operate as the two central midfielders to control the tempo. Heggem and Furlong drive forward with the ball to connect the defense to the attack. Mowatt plays in the hole behind the strikers, acting as the main playmaker to find the feet of the forwards or play through the lines.

An aggressive front line provides the main threat in this lineup. Diangana and Maja operate as two center forwards, often working in combination to pin the last defender. They provide a strong central presence to hold up the ball or make runs in behind. On the flanks, Johnston and Fellows act as wide wingers who stay high up the pitch to stretch the defense. Johnston and Fellows aim to get to the byline to deliver crosses or cut inside to shoot.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages in transition and attacking volume. The presence of two strikers alongside a ten creates a heavy central load that is hard to mark. Additionally, the four players in the middle and four in the front allow West Brom to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch.
