Oxford United aims to remain defensively solid and rely on a compact setup, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and defend the middle, looking to strike during transitions once the opposition loses control. The team focuses on making it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines, prioritizing a compact block that is hard to break down.

In goal, Cumming acts as the last line of defense. The back five is organized around Vaulks, who sits centrally to command the area. He is supported by Brown on the left and Moore on the right, both of whom must stay tight to mark runners and win headers. Long operates as the right wing back, tasked with providing width and tracking back to cover the flank, while Bennett plays as the left wing back to balance the defensive line. This unit works together to keep the lines close and ensure no gaps appear behind the central defenders.

The midfield functions as a flat four that sits in front of the back five. Brannagan acts as the single pivot, sitting deep to shield the defense and win the second ball. To his sides, Rodrigues and Phillips provide the engine, with the responsibility to press in a mid-block and disrupt play. Goodgham occupies the left side of this midfield line to connect the defensive unit with the forward. These players must work to squeeze the space and force the opposition into wide areas where they can be doubled up on.

Oxford United utilizes a lone striker, Harris, to lead the line. He works as a pressing centre-forward, tasked with bothering the opposition centre-backs and forcing long balls. When the team wins the ball, Harris holds up the ball to allow the midfielders to push up. The wide players, Long and Bennett, provide the width needed to stretch the defence when the team moves from a low block into attack. The goal is to find Harris through the lines or use the runners from midfield to catch the opposition out of position.

This formation offers great compactness when defending, making it very difficult for teams to play through the middle. The presence of three central defenders alongside a dedicated pivot means the team is rarely caught out by central runs. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the team transitions into an attacking phase.

The 5-4-1 formation is a disciplined way for Oxford United to control matches against higher quality sides. It is best suited for games where the team needs to sit deep and defend a lead or play against heavy possession teams.
