Blackburn aim to play a highly vertical game built on quick transitions and overwhelming numbers in the final third. This lineup operates in a 2-4-4 formation designed to catch opponents off guard through rapid movement. The primary goal for Blackburn is to bypass the opposition middle with speed and directness.

PEARS stands between the posts to command his area. Ahead of him, the defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with CARTER and HYAM. These central defenders must stay compact and work as a pair to cover the space behind them. Because the team lacks full backs, CARTER and HYAM have to be ready to step up and intercept passes or engage attackers early to prevent them from turning. They must defend zonally to manage the large gaps on the flanks.

The midfield functions as a four man unit to control the center of the pitch. TRONSTAD acts as the anchor to shield the defense, while BECK and JRC operate as the engine to drive the ball forward. JRC and BECK provide the connection between the defensive line and the attack. TRAVIS plays in the hole as an attacking ten to find pockets of space. He looks to link the midfield to the front line by playing through the lines. This midfield group must press in a mid-block to win the ball back and immediately look for the forwards.

The attacking unit utilizes four players to stretch the opposition defense. DOLAN and ACD occupy the wide areas to provide width, with DOLAN playing on the left and ACD on the right. In the center, CANTWELL and OHASHI operate as a two man partnership. CANTWELL and OHASHI work to find space between the defenders, often looking for runs in behind. The wingers are expected to cut inside to create overloads in the middle, while the two center forwards look to win the second ball and hold up the ball for late runners.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the attacking zone. By committing four players forward, Blackburn can quickly overwhelm a standard back four during a transition. The team also benefits from the speed of transition, as the midfield can quickly find the front four to exploit a disorganized defense. This setup creates significant pressure on the opposition center backs.
