Roma operates with a heavy emphasis on central congestion and verticality using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the pitch by packing the central zones to control the tempo and control the ball. It is a formation built to suffocate opponents in the middle third and create quick passing sequences to find the forwards.

Arthur guards the goal as the lone man in the defensive unit. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders with Hummels and Dellas working together. Hummels acts as a ball playing defender who can step up to intercept, while Dellas provides cover and uses his aerial strength to defend the area. This small defensive unit relies on the midfield ahead of them to prevent direct runs and force the opposition to play around the perimeter.

The midfield is the engine room for Roma, consisting of six players designed to occupy every lane. A deep-lying pairing of Smalling and Ashley Cole shields the two centre-backs, with Ashley Cole often looking to carry the ball forward from deep. In front of them, Falcão and De Rossi form a central duo that connects the defense to the attack. De Rossi acts as the link, while Falcão seeks to find pockets of space. Further up, Mhyktarian and Perotto/Renato operate in the half-spaces to drive the ball toward the final third. This heavy midfield block is designed to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly.

Roma utilizes two forwards in a partnership to exploit the space left by retreating defenses. Dybala plays as a left-sided forward, often looking to cut inside to create goalscoring chances, while Totti operates as the primary playmaker from a deeper forward position. These two attackers work in close combinations to break the line. The movement of Mhyktarian and Perotto/Renato supports them, creating overlaps and providing options for cutbacks. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition once the heavy midfield wins the ball back.

A major tactical strength of this formation is the extreme numerical superiority in midfield. By having six players in the central corridor, Roma can easily outnumber opponents and control the ball. Another advantage is the ability to compress the space between the lines, making it very difficult for the opposition to play through the middle. This makes Roma very hard to break down when they sit in a mid-block.

This 2-6-2 lineup is a high-risk, high-reward system centered on midfield dominance. It is best suited for matches where Roma needs to control possession against teams that sit deep and defend in a low block.
