Plymouth Football Formation
Starting Lineup
HAZARD 60% (Grimshaw) · EDWARDS 50% (Palsson/Sorinola) · SZUCZ 50% (Pleguezuelo) · GIBSON 70% (Galloway) · MUMBA 70% (Ogbeta) · RANDELL 50% (Al Hajj) · GYABI 70% (Wright) · WHITTAKER 90% · HOUGHTON 50% (Forshaw/Roberts) · CISSOKO 80% (Bundu/Issaka) · OBAFEMI 50% (Hardie/Tijani)Plymouth look to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike with speed, using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a very vertical game that looks to catch opponents on the break or through rapid ball movement in the final third. The goal for Plymouth is to crowd the central areas and use extreme width to stretch the opposition.
Hazard stays between the posts to oversee the defense. The back line consists of a very narrow pair of central defenders in Szucz and Gibson. Since there are no full backs, Szucz and Gibson must be prepared to cover large amounts of ground and defend one on one when the opposition hits in behind. They act as a deep block when necessary but often push up to support the high press.
The midfield acts as the engine of this formation through a heavy five man unit. Mumba and Houghton occupy the central roles to protect the two defenders and win the second ball. Edwards sits on the left side to connect the play, while Randell and Gyabi operate in the half spaces to link the midfield to the attack. This midfield unit is designed to squeeze the space and dominate the center of the pitch to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.
Attacking the opposition relies on three players spread across the front. Obafemi plays as the lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. On the flanks, Cissoko and Whittaker act as wide wingers who stay close to the touchline to provide width. These attackers look to receive the ball in space to create runs in behind or to allow the midfield to arrive late into the box.
A major advantage for this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central midfield areas. By packing the middle with Mumba, Houghton, Edwards, Randell, and Gyabi, Plymouth can easily win possession and transition quickly. The wide positioning of Cissoko and Whittaker also creates opportunities to isolate defenders in one on one situations once the ball is moved quickly from the center to the flanks.
This 2-5-3 formation is built for high risk and high reward football. It is best suited for matches against teams that sit deep and struggle to deal with rapid vertical transitions.
