Spain aims to control the tempo of the game through heavy ball retention and aggressive pressure in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to stay in the opponent half and squeeze the space in the middle. The goal is to use possession to tire the opposition and create openings by winning the ball back high up the pitch.

Sánchez stands as the last line of defense within a five man back line. Rodri sits as the central defender to help play out from the back with his passing range. Le Normand and Pau Torres act as the side centre backs to provide cover and defend the half spaces. Grimaldo and Carvajal play as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width and support the attack. This defensive unit can drop into a low block or step up to maintain a high line to catch players offside.

A double pivot is used to manage the center of the pitch. Pedri operates as a playmaker with a wide passing range to find teammates in tight spaces and break the line. F. Ruiz works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward and winning the second ball. They must be able to intercept passes and cover the large gaps when the wing backs move up the pitch. They link the back five to the front three by recycling possession.

The attacking unit uses three players to pin the last defender. Yamal plays as an inverted winger on the right and likes to cut inside to use his dribbling. Olmo operates on the left to pull wide and then drive into the box or lay it off to others. Oyarzabal leads the line as a striker to hold up the ball and find space between the defenders. They press from the front to win it back high up the pitch and look to play through the lines.

A major strength is the ability to create wide overloads as Grimaldo and Carvajal overlap the wingers. The formation also offers compactness when defending since the wing backs can drop to form a flat back five. This gives Spain the ability to transition quickly and catch opponents on the break.

This 5-2-3 formation defines the tactical identity of La Roja through control and width. It is ideally suited for facing opponents that rely on deep blocks or quick counter attacks.
