Starting Lineup

To play a direct and vertical style of football, River employs a 5-2-3 formation. The lineup aims to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition while remaining compact in the middle. This formation prioritizes quick transitions to catch the opponent out of position.

Carrizo operates between the posts to protect the goal. The defensive unit sits in a back five, where Venini acts as the central defender to command the area. Pérez plays as the right centre-back and Guastavino occupies the left centre-back position. The wide defenders, Sola as the left wing back and Mantegari as the right wing back, are tasked to push high up the pitch to provide width. They can also drop back to form a deep defensive block when the team loses possession.

In the middle of the pitch, Labruna and Prado form a double pivot. They are responsible for shielding the defence and connecting the back line to the front three. Labruna and Prado must work together to win the second ball and recycle possession. One midfielder often drops deep to help the centre-backs, while the other looks to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. This two-man midfield must be disciplined to avoid being bypassed by the opposition.

The attacking line uses three players to pressure the opposition. Gómez leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Vernazza and Loustau play as wide wingers, looking to cut inside or stretch the defence by staying near the touchline. The formation relies on the wing backs, Sola and Mantegari, to overlap the wingers and create crossing opportunities. This creates constant movement, with runs in behind and players arriving late into the box.

A major advantage for River is the ability to create wide overloads through the high positioning of the wing backs. By having Sola and Mantegari push forward, the team can pin the last defender and create extra passing lanes. The formation also offers defensive stability through the three central defenders, Pérez, Venini, and Guastavino, which makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. This allows the team to transition quickly once the ball is won back.
