Starting Lineup

Carrizo · Venini · Vairo · Mantegari · Rossi · Sola · Labruna · Sívori · Loustau · Vernazza · Gómez

River focuses on defensive stability and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a counter attacking style of football. By staying compact, they aim to absorb pressure and then strike quickly when the opposition loses control.

Carrizo starts in goal to command his area and clear the lines when needed. The defensive unit functions as a back five with Rossi acting as the central defender to anchor the unit. Vairo and Venini play as the wide centre-backs, providing cover and helping to win the second ball. Sola and Mantegari operate as attacking wing backs, tasked with pushing high to provide width and support the attack. This back five can shift into a narrow defensive block to deny the turn or spread wide to manage the pitch.

In the middle of the pitch, Labruna and Sívori form a two-man midfield. This pairing is responsible for shielding the defence and recycling possession. Labruna works to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces, while Sívori focuses on pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. They act as the vital link that moves the ball from the defensive unit to the attacking trio.

The attacking line features three players, with Gómez playing as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On either side, Vernazza and Loustau act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances in central areas. This movement allows Sola and Mantegari to overlap the winger and whip it in toward the far post. The front three work together to press the opposition back line, looking to win it back high up the pitch.

A major tactical advantage for River is the ability to create wide overloads. Because the wing backs push so high, they can double up on opposition defenders alongside Vernazza and Loustau. Additionally, the formation provides immense defensive compactness when playing deep. By sitting in a mid-block, the team can squeeze the space and force the opponent to go direct.

This 5-2-3 formation is designed to be defensively solid while remaining lethal on the break. It is best suited for facing teams that push many players forward and leave themselves vulnerable to being hit in behind on the transition.
