Starting Lineup

Carrizo · Pérez · Vairo · Mantegari · Urriolabeitía · Sola · Labruna · Prado · Zárate · De Bourgoing · Menéndez

River utilizes a 5-2-3 formation to prioritize defensive stability while maintaining the ability to hit opponents on the break. This lineup is built to play a counter attacking style of football. The team stays compact and waits for the opposition to commit men forward before looking to exploit the space left behind.

Carrizo acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a back five where Urriolabeitía sits central to win headers and command the area. Vairo and Pérez play as the wide center backs, tasked with covering the channels and protecting the space behind the wing backs. Sola and Mantegari act as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width. Sola works the left flank while Mantegari covers the right, allowing the unit to shift as a single block to deny the turn of attackers.

The midfield works as a two-man pairing with Labruna and Prado. These two players are responsible for connecting the defensive unit to the attacking line. Labruna and Prado must shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. They work to press in a mid-block and try to intercept passes before they reach the opposition attackers. Once they regain control, they look to play through the lines to find the forwards quickly.

Up front, the team employs three attackers with Menéndez leading the line as a lone striker. Menéndez is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for others to join. Zárate and De Bourgoing operate as wide players who look to stretch the defense. Zárate can cut inside to create goalscoring chances while De Bourgoing stays wide to deliver crosses. The wing backs, Sola and Mantegari, often overlap the wingers to create numbers in the wide areas, allowing the team to hit in behind on the transition.

A major advantage of this lineup for River is the defensive compactness when defending in a low block. The team can also create wide overloads using the movement of the wing backs and the wingers. The speed of transition is another key strength, as the front three can immediately attack the space once Labruna or Prado win possession. This allows the team to bypass the midfield and strike quickly.

The 5-2-3 formation offers a solid base to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is a formation best suited for games against ball dominant opponents who leave large gaps in their defensive line.
