Courtois guards the goal with his massive presence to command the area. The defence works as a back five. X. Alonso sits at the heart of the line to play out from the back, using his composure to find teammates. Varane and Ramos act as the two wide centre-backs in this formation, with Ramos being dominant in the air to clear the lines and Varane providing cover. R. Carlos works as an attacking wing back on the left to whip it in, while Carvajal covers the right flank to support the attack.

In the middle, Kroos and Modric form a two man midfield. Kroos operates as a deep lying playmaker, using his passing range to switch play and find the feet of the attackers. Modric works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive on the half-turn or carrying the ball forward to break the line. They must stay compact to deny the pivot of the opposition and protect the space in front of the centre-backs.

The front line uses three attackers to pin the opposition. Higuaín plays as a pressing centre forward to win the second ball and hold up the ball for others. Di María operates on the right, often cutting inside to play through the lines. C. Ronaldo starts on the left but makes runs in behind to attack the far post. The wing backs overlap the winger to create wide overloads, allowing the team to cross on the run or cut it back from the byline.

A primary strength is the ability to create wide overloads. When R. Carlos and Carvajal push high, they force the opposition to defend deep and leave space in the middle. The midfield also offers control, as Modric and Kroos can recycle possession to keep the team in control. The speed of transition is a major threat, as the team can move from a mid-block to a direct attack in seconds.

This formation offers a solid defensive base while maintaining a lethal attacking presence. It is perfectly suited for facing teams that rely on possession, allowing Real Madrid to sit deep and counter at pace.
