Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
de Vrij · Bastoni · Pavard · Dimarco · Dumfries · Barella · Zielinski · Calhanoglu · M. Thuram · Lautaro · SommerInter plays a vertical game through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball and move forward with pace. By using a narrow central core, the team aims to control the tempo and move the ball through the thirds quickly.
Sommer operates as the lone goalkeeper. The back three consists of Pavard on the right, de Vrij in the center, and Bastoni on the left. Pavard works to defend zonally and covers the space behind the wingback. de Vrij is dominant in the air and works to clear the lines during periods of pressure. Bastoni is a ball playing defender who can step up into midfield to help with possession. This unit works to hold a compact shape and deny the turn to oncoming strikers.
The midfield functions to control the center and link the defense to the attack. Calhanoglu plays in an advanced role to create from deep with his passing range and find the feet of the striker. Barella works to carry the ball forward and uses his pressing intensity to win it back high up the pitch. Zielinski connects the lines by playing short from the back and finding pockets of space. Dimarco and Dumfries provide the necessary width, often moving to the byline to whip it in or push high to create overloads.
In the final third, M. Thuram and Lautaro operate as a two-man partnership. M. Thuram uses his pace to knock it in behind and stretch the defence, while Lautaro uses his movement to trigger a press on the opposition back line. They work to find pockets of space and create runs in behind for each other. This is designed to allow the wide players to deliver early crosses into the box.
A major strength for Inter is the ability to create wide overloads through the wingbacks. This forces the opposition to stretch the defence and opens space in the middle. The ability to break quickly on the transition is another advantage, especially when the team can split the defence with a through ball from Calhanoglu.
This 3-5-2 formation provides a solid base for both defensive stability and rapid attacking bursts. It is a formation best suited for games against teams that leave space behind their defensive line.
