Plymouth seeks to dominate through heavy verticality and aggressive numbers in the middle of the pitch. The team uses a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm opponents with sheer volume of bodies in advanced areas. This lineup is built to play a very high pressing game that forces errors deep in the opposition half. By pushing so many players forward, Plymouth aims to win the ball back quickly and strike before the defense can settle.

In goal, Grimshaw acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit relies on a narrow back two consisting of Szucz and Gibson. Because there are only two central defenders, they must play a high line and be prepared to cover massive amounts of space behind them. Szucz and Gibson operate as ball playing defenders who must be ready to step up and intercept long balls. This small defensive unit functions as a single block that relies on the midfield to prevent direct runs towards the goal.

The midfield is the engine room of this formation, utilizing five players to congest the central areas. Al Hajj operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space. Randell and Gyabi act as the central pairing, where one works to shield the two defenders while the other tries to carry the ball forward. Edwards provides width on the left while Mumba occupies the right side. This five man midfield allows the team to press in pairs and ensure that the opposition cannot easily play out from the back.

The attack features three forwards who occupy the entire width of the final third. Obafemi acts as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition center backs. On the flanks, Cissoko and Whittaker work as wide wingers who want to cut inside to create goal scoring chances. They often pull wide to stretch the defense before moving into central areas to link up with Obafemi. The team builds the attack by using quick combinations and looking to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Plymouth is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to squeeze the space and control the tempo.
