Chile National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Brayan Cortes · Suazo · Diaz · Catalan · Isla · Pizarro · Echeverria · Brereton · Tapia · Osorio · PalaciosChile operates with a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on defensive solidity while looking to break quickly when winning the ball. By sitting deep, the team aims to draw the opponent forward and then use the speed of the front three to exploit spaces in the transition.
Brayan Cortes guards the goal for Chile. This defensive unit works as a back five with Pizarro acting as the central defender to organize the line and cover the width of the box. Catalan and Diaz sit on either side of him as the wide centre backs to cover the spaces left by the wing backs. Isla acts as the right wing back to provide width and support the attack, while Suazo plays as the left wing back to push up the flank. These defenders work to hold the line and defend zonally to keep the unit compact.
In the middle of the pitch, Echeverria and Palacios form a double pivot. These two players must work to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle third. Palacios and Echeverria are tasked to connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back and recycling possession. They need to press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines and to force a long ball.
Three players make up the front line to stretch the defense. Brereton leads the line as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line and pin the last defender. Tapia and Osorio occupy the wide areas, with Tapia on the left and Osorio on the right. By cutting inside, they create space for the wing backs to overlap. This allows the team to use the width of Isla and Suazo to whip it in or to find Brereton with a through ball.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to win the ball back high up the pitch through coordinated pressing. Wide overloads are also gained when Isla and Suazo push forward to join the attack. This forces the opposition to track runners and often creates one on one situations for the wingers to exploit.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a reliable way to defend deep and strike on the break. It is ideally suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high line.
