Starting Lineup

River Plate plays with a high level of discipline, focusing on a mid-block to frustrate opponents. This 4-5-1 formation is built to sit in a compact block and wait for the right moment to hit on the break. The goal is to deny space between the lines and use the work rate of the five midfielders to win the ball back high up the pitch.

Armani guards the goal and directs the back four. Bustos and E. Díaz act as full backs, ready to overlap when the team moves forward. Pezzella and P. Díaz form the central defensive pairing. Pezzella uses his aerial strength to win headers and clear the lines during set pieces. P. Díaz plays as a covering defender to sweep behind a high line when the team presses. The defensive unit works to hold the line and shift together to block the runner.

The midfield is a five-man unit led by a double pivot. Villagra and Simón sit in front of the defense to deny the pivot and shield the back four. They are joined by Acuña and Meza who work to compress the midfield and recycle possession. Lanzini plays more advanced in the half-spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This group is tasked to press in a mid-block and pick up runners as they move through the thirds.

Borja operates as a lone striker and a target man. He works to hold up the ball and use his clinical finishing to find the back of the net. The attack is built through quick transitions where the wide midfielders and full backs try to spread wide. E. Díaz and Bustos look to overlap the winger to provide crosses. Borja is tasked to pin the last defender to create space for Lanzini or Meza to arrive late into the box.

River gains a major advantage from the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. Having five players in the middle makes it hard for the opposition to play through the lines. The team also relies on the speed of transition to catch opponents out. When the ball is won, the quick movement of the midfielders allows the team to break quickly and exploit the space left behind.
