Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Svilar · Celik · Mancini · Ndicka · Angelino · Paredes · Konè · Cristante · Soulè · Dybala · DovbykRoma aims to play a direct and aggressive style of football using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back quickly and hit opponents in transition with speed and power. The team relies on high energy to squeeze the space in the middle and wide areas, making it a very difficult unit to play against when they trigger a press.
Svilar guards the goal as the lone goalkeeper. The defensive unit functions as a back five, with Paredes acting as the central defender to sweep behind the line. Mancini and Ndicka operate as the two wide centre-backs, with Mancini being dominant in the air and Ndicka providing cover. Celik and Angelino act as attacking wing backs, pushing high up the pitch to provide width. This system allows the defenders to stay compact when defending zonally and quickly move from a defensive block into an attacking stance.
The midfield consists of a double pivot featuring Konè and Cristante. Cristante works to shield the defence and intercept passes, while Konè acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball. These two midfielders link the defensive line to the attack by recycling possession and finding the forwards. They must work hard to cover the gaps left by the wing backs and ensure the team stays compact in a mid-block when they do not have the ball.
Roma uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Dovbyk acts as a target man, holding up the ball and using his physical presence to win the second ball. Soulè and Dybala play as wide attackers, with Soulè hugging the touchline and Dybala cutting inside from the left to create chances. This front line is designed to make runs in behind and create combinations in tight spaces. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One major advantage for Roma is the wide overloads created when Celik and Angelino overlap the wingers. This forces the opposition to defend extra players on the flanks. Another strength is the ability to win the ball back high up the pitch, allowing for quick transitions before the opponent can get organized. The numerical superiority in the central areas during defensive phases makes the team very hard to break down.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a strong platform for quick counter attacks and defensive solidity. It is best suited for matches against teams that hold a lot of possession and leave space behind their midfield.
