MASCIANGELO act as wing backs who must track back to form a five man line when out of possession. This unit works to defend zonally and ensure no space opens up behind the defenders.

The midfield operates as a flat line of four to squeeze the space in front of the defense. S. Branca and A. Vita occupy the central roles to protect the back three and win the second ball. F. Amatucci provides extra support to help the unit compress the midfield when the ball is on the opposite side. C. Cassano plays in the hole behind the striker to connect the midfield to the attack. This group is tasked to press in a mid-block and disrupt the passing lanes of the opposition.

L. Pandolfi operates as a lone striker tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support. He must fight against the opposing center backs and try to find the feet of the striker when the team wins possession. The attack relies on the wing backs, L. Carissoni and E. MASCIANGELO, to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. When Cittadella wins the ball, C. Cassano looks to play through the lines to find Pandolfi in behind.

A major strength of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. The five defenders and four midfielders make it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to hit in behind on the transition if the wing backs and Cassano can exploit the space left by attacking full backs.
