Starting Lineup

U. Garcia · Lirola · Kondogbia · Balerdi · Højbjerg · Wahi · Harit · Greenwood · Rabiot · Rongier · Rulli

Marseille operates with a focus on defensive solidity and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and hit opponents on the break through direct vertical movements. The primary intent is to maintain a compact block that remains difficult for any opponent to penetrate.

Rulli stays between the posts to command the area and organize the back line. The back five features Lirola as the right wing back and U. Garcia as the left wing back. Højbjerg sits in the center of the defensive line to win headers and direct the defensive unit. Balerdi and Kondogbia play as the side centre backs to cover the wide spaces and track back when needed. The whole unit works to hold a low block and force the opposition to play wide rather than through the middle.

The midfield relies on a double pivot with Rabiot and Rongier. Rabiot uses his high pressing intensity to win the ball high up the pitch and drives forward to carry the ball into the final third. Rongier works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, dropping deep to receive from the centre backs and recycle possession. They must work together to squeeze the space and prevent the opponent from playing through the lines or finding passing lanes.

The front line features three attackers with Wahi acting as the lone striker. Harit plays on the left wing and Greenwood operates on the right. Greenwood often cuts inside to use his dribbling and shooting to threaten the goal. Harit looks to spread wide and whip it in to the box for Wahi to finish. Wahi works to hold up the ball and lay it off to teammates to create space for late runners. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition back line.

A significant advantage for Marseille is the ability to create wide overloads. When Lirola and U. Garcia overlap the wingers, they provide extra numbers on the flanks to stretch the defence. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a narrow block. This makes it hard for opponents to find gaps between the players or combine in tight spaces.

This 5-2-3 formation is a reliable way to play a counter attacking style of football. It is most effective against teams that commit many players forward and leave space for runs in behind.
