Starting Lineup

FCSB focuses on being defensively solid through a compact 5-4-1. This formation is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to commit players forward before hitting them in transition. The lineup aims to deny space between the lines and force the opponent into wide areas where they can be trapped.

Târnovanu stays on his line to command the area during defensive phases. The back line operates as a narrow defensive block with three central defenders consisting of Șut, Dawa, and Ngezana. Șut acts as the central anchor, while Dawa and Ngezana cover the space to the sides. Radunovic and Crețu act as attacking wing backs to provide width when the team wins the ball. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space in front of them, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes.

The midfield works in a flat four to protect the back five. Olaru acts as a central engine, driving forward to connect the lines while Băluță stays more central to shield the defence. On the flanks, Tavi and Ștefănescu work to cover the wide areas and support the wing backs. Olaru and Băluță must fight to win the second ball to trigger quick attacks. This midfield unit is tasked with tracking runners and ensuring they do not get outnumbered in the middle.

Up front, Bîrligea acts as a lone striker tasked with holding up the ball. He must fight for long balls and try to find the feet of incoming midfielders. The attack relies on the wingers, Tavi and Ștefănescu, to push up and support him. When the team transitions, the plan is to hit in behind on the transition or use the width provided by Radunovic and Crețu to stretch the defence. Bîrligea must often battle with center backs alone to create space for late runs from the midfield.

FCSB gains an advantage through their compactness when defending, making it very hard for teams to break them down centrally. The formation also allows for quick transitions by using the wide players to exploit space left by attacking opponents. By having five defenders, the team can easily shift to a low block to protect a lead.

This 5-4-1 formation is a defensive tool designed to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against high possession teams where the goal is to frustrate the opponent and exploit their high line.
